Website not loading? A step-by-step checklist
When a page will not load, the cause is either the website, your connection, or something in between. This checklist narrows it down in a few minutes, starting with the quickest checks.
1. Is it down for everyone?
Paste the address into the checker. We load it from our own server and from twelve probes in different countries. If they can all reach it, the site is up and the problem is on your side. If most fail, the site is down and you can stop troubleshooting.
2. Check the address
Look for typos, a missing .com, or http:// where the site needs https://.
3. Try another site
If nothing loads, your internet connection is the problem. Check Wi-Fi, restart the router (unplug it for 30 seconds), and try again.
4. Try another device or network
If the site loads on your phone using mobile data, the problem is your home network, router or DNS. If it fails everywhere, the problem is probably the site.
5. Reload without the cache
Press Ctrl + F5 (Windows) or Cmd + Shift + R (Mac). An old stored copy can show an error that has already been fixed. A private window gives you a clean test.
6. Turn off extensions and VPNs
Ad blockers, privacy tools and VPNs can block a site, or break one part of it. Disable them one at a time and reload.
7. Flush your DNS cache
Your device keeps a list of site addresses. If one is out of date, the site can look down. See how to flush your DNS cache.
8. Check the date and time
A wrong clock on your device causes certificate errors on every secure site. Set it to update automatically.
9. Try again later
If the checker says the site is down for everyone, nothing you do will fix it. Check the site’s status page or social accounts, and try again in a while.
Still stuck on a specific error? See ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT or server errors.
