How to tell if a website is down for everyone or just you

When a page will not load, the first question is whose problem it is. These four steps answer it in about a minute.

Step 1: ask a checker

Enter the address into the siteupdown.com checker. We load it from our own server and from probes in several countries at the same time. If most of them reach the site, it is up and the problem is likely on your side. If most fail, it is down for everyone.

Step 2: change your network

Turn off Wi-Fi and try on mobile data, or the other way round. If it loads on one but not the other, your network or provider is the cause.

Step 3: change your device or browser

Try another browser, a private window or another device. If that works, the cause is your browser’s saved data or an extension. See how to clear it.

Step 4: check the source

Large services have an official status page or a social media account that announces problems. These are the best source during a big outage, and they are often updated before any checker notices.

Reading the results

  • Up for everyone: every probe reached it. Look at your own connection.
  • Reachable from some places: a regional problem. Your region may be affected.
  • Down for everyone: nothing reaches it. Wait and try again later.
  • Blocking automated checks or no answer: the site may be fine but refuses tools. Open it in your browser to be sure.
