MX record lookup

MX records tell the world which servers receive email for your domain. If they are missing or wrong, email sent to you bounces or never arrives.

This tool lists the mail servers for a domain in priority order, shows the addresses they resolve to, and checks for the SPF and DMARC records that help stop other people sending email in your name.

How to read the results

  • Priority decides the order. The mail server with the lowest number is tried first, and the others are backups.
  • SPF is a text record listing which servers may send email for the domain.
  • DMARC tells receiving servers what to do with email that fails those checks.
  • No MX records means the domain cannot receive email.

Questions

Why does email still fail when my MX records look right?

Check that the priority and host names match what your email provider gave you, and that there are no old records left from a previous provider.

Do I need SPF and DMARC?

They are not required to receive email, but without them messages you send are more likely to land in spam, and anyone can pretend to be you.

How long do MX changes take?

It depends on the TTL of the old records. See our DNS propagation guide.
