What to do when an app or online service stops working

When an app that you use every day stops working, it helps to work out quickly whether the fault is yours or the service’s. This keeps you from wasting time on fixes that cannot help.

1. Confirm it is an outage

Use the checker or the service’s page on this site. Then see whether the website works while the app does not, or the other way round. Outages often affect only one of them.

2. Look at the official source

Most services run a status page or a support account on social media. They announce problems and say when they are fixed.

3. Do not make things worse

  • Do not reinstall the app or reset your device unless the service says to.
  • Do not change your password just because a sign-in fails during an outage.
  • Do not repeat orders, payments or messages that seem stuck. Check your history first, because the first attempt may have gone through.
  • Be careful with emails or messages claiming to fix an outage. Scammers use outages as cover.

4. Simple things worth one try

  1. Close the app completely and reopen it.
  2. Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data.
  3. Update the app to the latest version.
  4. Restart your device.

5. Wait, then try again

If the service is down for everyone, only the service can fix it. Most outages are over within an hour or two. If yours continues after the service reports it fixed, contact its support and mention your device, your network and the time.
